Description

Facing a growing gap between health care supply and demand

SLO County is facing a significant health care provider shortage in the coming years as the population ages and a critical mass of providers reach retirement age. By 2025, the Central Coast is projected to have a 18.7% shortfall in primary care clinicians, the most severe deficit in the state*.

You are invited to attend this special forum on building SLO County's health care workforce to meet the increasing demands our community will face in the years ahead. Keynote speaker and local panelists will explore practical and creative solutions:

  • Learn strategies to recruit and train physicians, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals.
  • Identify priority health workforce pathways.
  • Explore the Community Health Worker model as an effective part of health care teams.

This forum follows the release of the California Future Health Workforce Commission’s 2018 report, Meeting the Demand for Health. Keynote speaker Jeff Oxendine, who served as co-director of the commission, will discuss the findings and local implications.

Following the keynote presentation, panels of local employers and educators will discuss the innovative efforts they're deploying to build and maintain effective teams at multiple layers within the industry, from physicians to nurse to community health workers. You will hear from:

  • Barry Johnson, Director, Education & Advocacy Services, Transitions-Mental Health Associations
  • Patty Herrera, MA, Manager of Community Health, Dignity Health
  • Jason Curtis, PhD., Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Cuesta College
  • Hugo Bravo-Chavez, PA-C, ATSU PCTE Fellow, Community Health Centers of the Central Coast
  • Willard Chung, MD, Family Medicine Residency Program, Marian Regional Medical Center

Agenda: Networking lunch at 12 noon, with speakers and panel discussions until 3 p.m. and a networking reception from 3-4 p.m

This event is presented by HEAL SLO in collaboration with CenCal Health, Central Coast Medical Association, Center for Family Strengthening, Community Health Centers, County of SLO Public Health Department, Dignity Health, Movement for Life, and Transitions-Mental Health Association, in an effort to meet goals identified in SLO County's Community Health Improvement Plan.
