DESCRIPTION

The New York Chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (NYAAPOR) biannual Meet the Masters Workshop features presentations from some of the most distinguished individuals in public opinion, market research, data analytics, polling and survey research. Recognizing the evolving nature of the research industry, this year’s line-up of speakers recognizes not only professionals well established in their disciplines but the expanding fields of UX Research and data science. Individuals at any stage of their careers will find this year’s workshop beneficial.

PANELISTS

HUMPHREY TAYLOR, President Emeritus, The Harris Poll – “A Lively Lifetime of Research - The Past is Still Present”

In his 56-year research career, Humphrey has had responsibility for 8,000 surveys in more than 80 countries. Beginning in the UK, his company conducted polling for three prime ministers. In the USA as of 1976, Humphrey was president, and then Chairman/CEO of the Harris Poll, where he pioneered the use of online surveys.Humphrey has testified 12 times to Congressional committees, was invited to the White House 10 times under 7 administrations and has met with three presidents.He’s published more than 1,000 columns, articles, and book chapters for the London Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and lectured at Harvard, Yale, and Oxford.

DON LEVY, Director, Siena College Research Institute – “Political Polling - New Approaches to Assessing the 2020 Polls”

Don has served as the director of the Siena College Research Institute (SCRI) since 2007, with polling focusing on local, statewide and national politics, as well as economic, health and social issues.

After working with The New York Times polling New York-centric issues, SCRI partnered with The Upshot. Their work has expanded to national polling, including: the presidential election (2016), 95 congressional and gubernatorial races across the United States (2018), and polling in Iowa (2020).

Don holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Connecticut and a B.A. from Yale University. He is a charter member of AAPOR’s Transparency Initiative.

DAVID DUTWIN, SVP, Business Ventures and Innovation at NORC– “Recent Changes in Research Methods - Panels, Mixed Modes and Sampling - oh my!”

David Dutwin is NORC’s senior vice president of strategic initiatives within the Business Ventures and Innovation department. David provides scientific and programmatic thought leadership in support of NORC’s ongoing innovations, ensuring work is disseminated throughout the scientific community.David is also the chief scientist of AmeriSpeak, NORC’s multi-client panel-based research platform, where he lends expertise on research design conceptualization, methodological innovation, and product development.He is a senior fellow of the Program for Opinion Research and Election Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as a lecturer. David is currently Past President of AAPOR.

SCOTT MCDONALD, President and CEO, ARF – “Newspeak in Research - A Glossary of Terms and Techniques for Our Times”

Scott McDonald is President and CEO of the Advertising Research Foundation. He has held senior research positions at leading global media companies, including Time Warner and Conde Nast, and he has actively promoted quality standards through various professional and industry associations. He served as a Trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation and is presently a Trustee of the Washington-based Population Reference Bureau. He has taught at Harvard and NYU and for 18 years taught courses on media measurement, media economics and content monetization at Columbia Business School. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley and holds a PhD from Harvard University.

AGNES YAO, UX Researcher, Facebook– “User Experience - An Approach to Getting it all Together”

Agnes Yao is a UX Researcher at Facebook on the News team, focused on improving the news experience for users on the platform. Before joining Facebook in 2016, she was in market research consulting for 9 years, with a focus on brand strategy, customer satisfaction & loyalty, and product optimization by applying qualitative and quantitative research methods.

KATHLEEN WELDON, Director of Data Operations and Communications, Roper Center – “Research Using Survey Archives - There’s Gold in Past Surveys”

Kathleen Weldon is Director of Data Operations and Communications at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University. She is responsible for archival acquisitions and collection management. Before joining Roper, she worked for the Harvard Opinion Research Program on survey research projects with media and foundation partners.
