Description

This dynamic panel will address how to safeguard the emotional health of youngsters with learning differences. Professionals from different fields in education, research, and clinical practice will highlight specific ways in which we can help our vulnerable learners thrive at school and in life.


Peter Becker, MA

Peter Becker currently serves as The Gunnery’s Head of School. A native of New Orleans and Manhattan, Peter attended The Taft School and then earned a B.A. with Distinction in Religious Studies from The University of Virginia and an M.A. in History from Yale University. Peter came to The Gunnery from The Lawrenceville School, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he served as a Master of History and Interdisciplinary Studies, Housemaster, Department Chair, and coach.


Amy Margolis, PhD

Dr. Amy Margolis is an Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology with an appointment in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. She is the Principal Investigator of the Promise Project Reading Study that examines how neural circuits that support cognitive control and learning processes produce reading disorders. Dr. Margolis received a B.A. in The Evolution of Human Behavior from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Applied Educational Psychology: School Psychology, and an MSEd. in Neuroscience and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.


Preetika Mukherjee, PhD

Dr. Preetika Mukherjee is a pediatric neuropsychologist working in private practice in New York City and she specializes in neuropsychological evaluations. Dr. Mukherjee received her doctorate in School Psychology from New York University and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. She is the former Director of Neuropsychological Evaluation Services at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. She has also served as an Assistant Professor at Columbia University and Mount Sinai where she taught and supervised postdoctoral fellows and psychology interns. Dr. Mukherjee is trilingual (English, Hindi, and Bengali) and has worked with families residing in the United States and abroad.


Scott Palyo, MD

Dr. Scott Palyo is a board-certified, child and adolescent psychiatrist working in private practice and as the Medical Director at Safe Horizon Counseling Center. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College; Immediate Past President of the New York Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (NYCCAP); co-chair of AACAP’s Bylaws Committee; and Executive Board Member to the American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Palyo trained at Emory University and University of Texas and completed his psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry residencies at St. Vincent’s Hospital/New York Medical College.


Sharon Thomas, MSEd, MSc (Moderator)

Sharon Thomas is a Learning Specialist and Educational Consultant. She is the Founder and Director of MAIA Education Resource Center, an organization that helps students K-College with and without learning differences/ADHD through with a range of academic support services and school placement/college counseling. Ms. Thomas completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Georgetown University and earned a Master's degree in Child Psychology at University College London as well as a Master's in General and Special Education at Hunter College.
