Interested in startups and enterpreneurship? Want to connect with UC San Diego alumni? Come to Student Alumni Associates' first event of the year, Meet the Boss: Startups! This event will feature a moderated Q&A with several alumni who have been involved with startups in different capacities, investing, and entrepreneurship. After, we will break out into a night of networking. Free food and refreshments will be served.

- Sarah Guthals '10, MS '13, PhD '14, Jacobs School of Engineering

Engineering Manager, GitHub; Founder, We Can

Sarah Guthals started San Diego-based ThoughtSTEM to increase access to high-quality computer science education for kids through in-person courses, online courses and software. She also created a prototype of a version of GitHub for kids younger than 13, and authored six books dedicated to teaching coding and technology to children. Sarah was selected as a 2016 Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Science category.


- Taner Halicioglu '96 (Computer Science, Revelle College)

Founder and Manager, Keshif Ventures

Taner Halicioglu is one of San Diego’s few “super angels” in local tech, meaning he’s an active investor in early-stage startups. He’s the founder of angel investment firm Keshif Ventures, and a member of SEED San Diego. His portfolio companies include Mogl, Portfolium, Doctible, CloudBeds, Soci, and PacketSled. Halicioglu joined Facebook in 2004, the year it was founded, and was instrumental in developing the hardware infrastructure that made it possible for Facebook to handle explosive growth. Halicioglu left Facebook in 2009 and served as a lead reliability engineer at Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine before returning to UC San Diego in 2013 as a lecturer in computer science. Halicioglu recently gifted UC San Diego, his alma mater, a $75 million donation to help create a new Data Science Institute, the Halicioglu Institute for Data Science. The gift is the largest the university has ever received from one of its graduates. Halicioglu serves on the Alumni Board of Directors for UC San Diego.


- Julie Wartell ’89 (Linguistics, Muir College)

Founder, The Analysis Group and Co-Founder, PubQuest

Julie Wartell is an independent advisor on public safety issues relating to crime analysis, problem solving and justice systems. She has held a variety of previous positions that include: Crime Analyst Coordinator for the San Diego District Attorney’s Office; Project Director of the East Valley COMPASS Initiative (a regional analysis effort); crime analyst for the San Diego Police Department, researcher for the Institute for Law and Justice and the Police Executive Research Forum, and Fellow at the National Institute of Justice Crime Mapping Research Center. Wartell has performed a wide range of research on and analysis of various crime problems and police-related issues, worked on the strategic planning efforts, and coordinated the development of a series of crime mapping training modules. She has done extensive training and presentations to officers and analysts throughout the country on topics relating to crime analysis and problem oriented policing, has edited or authored numerous publications, and currently teaches GIS in Urban Studies at UC San Diego. She has a Master’s in Public Administration with an emphasis in Criminal Justice Administration.

In addition, Wartell began teaching “Craft Breweries and the Urban Economy” in 2016. When she is not teaching, mentoring students, volunteering or fighting crime, she runs a brewery mapping company which allows her to gather real data from the field for her work at UC San Diego.

Co-Founder & CEO of StemoniX

Ping Yeh MS, MBA, PMP, PgMP, Co-Founder & CEO of StemoniX, has formed and led teams to produce products merging core intellectual property from startups to F100 corporations to produce world-changing devices, including digital storage nanotechnology, operating system software and memory chips found worldwide. Yeh serves on the Alumni Board of Directors for UC San Diego.
