Meet the Artists Reception | Saturday, April 29 | 2:00 – 4:00 pm | FREE

Please join us on Saturday, April 29 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for a reception to meet artists Mike McConnell and Alexandra Chiou to view their solo exhibitions “Elsewhere” and "Mirage" which are on view in the Kay & Terrace Galleries. McConnell & Chiou will deliver brief Artist Remarks at 2:30 pm. FREE

ELSEWHERE: Aggressively manipulating paint, wax crayon and ink on the hard surface of his hand-built cradled wood panels, Mike McConnell first applies pigment with a brush then uses single edge razor blades to draw and scrape into the fields of color. His often playful and visually complex compositions are built using a collage-like process where the artist cuts out shapes and converts the history of his initial painting into a new conversation. A keen observer who paints intuitively, McConnell usually turns to nature for inspiration to create bold and vibrant works that reflect his varied interests and memories in abstracted scenes filled with patterns and witty narratives. The Baltimore artist earned his BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1975 and worked for more than 30 years as an illustrator, freelancing for advertising agencies and design firms in the Baltimore and Washington, DC metropolitan area. Since 2012, McConnell has focused exclusively on his fine art studio practice and since 2015 has maintained a studio at The Motor House in Baltimore, MD. The award winning artist is a 2016 recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. His work has been exhibited in solo shows at School 33, Baltimore, MD; and The Athenaeum, Alexandria, VA; as well as in regional and national juried group exhibitions at the Creative Alliance, Baltimore, MD; McLean Project for the Arts, McLean, VA; Strathmore Mansion, Bethesda, MD; Platform Gallery, Baltimore, MD; Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, Chautauqua, NY. MIRAGE: Combining her interest in science, philosophy, and natural history, Alexandra Chiou investigates the environment using pen, ink and acrylic paint on paper, which she often cuts and layers to add texture and dimension. An avid explorer and outdoor enthusiast, the Maryland artist is intrigued by the complex patterns, shapes and vibrant colors found in the natural world, whether hiking in the mountains of the Shenandoah or the jungles of Malaysia. Drawn to the idea of primordial landscapes free of manmade structures, her focus on the subject of unexplored terrains has also morphed into a fascination with the beginnings of life and the connections humans share with geography. Chiou was a Strathmore Fine Artist in Residence, Bethesda, MD (2015). Her work has been exhibited in both regional and national exhibitions, including a solo exhibit at Hillyer Art Space, Washington, DC as well as group exhibits at Vivid Solutions Gallery, Washington, DC; Anacostia Arts Center, Washington, DC; American University Museum, Washington, DC; Mansion at Strathmore, Bethesda, MD; Rawls Museum, Courtland, VA; Redline Project Space, Denver, CO; artdc Gallery, Hyattsville, MD; and University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. Chiou earned a BA in Studio Art and a BS in Commerce from University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. To learn more, visit: www.alexandrachiou.com
