Jim McKelvey, founder of Square (square.com) and now LaunchCode (launch-code.net) wants to share his vision of better jobs through programming. He will be presenting his vision this Thursday evening.
There are 150,000 new computer programming jobs in the U.S. every year and only 14,000 computer science grads. At the same time, many employees and graduates in other fields (humanities, social sciences, traditional sciences, etc) have a hard time finding good jobs. Knowing enough programming to get a job is surprisingly easy and LaunchCode can help anyone with a basic amount of skills get on a track to jobs where the median salary is 80k. The goal of Jim's visit is to talk with as many people as possible and tell them they can still study philosophy, history, english, or biology (or computer science), or stay in their current career field, but with just a few basic programming skills, LauncCode can help them go much further - even if it is just towards empowering them with the skills to make an impact in their fields of interest in the digital age.
