Ambler Author Eric Bell talks LGBT children’s books, growing up gay

LGBT characters remain underrepresented in children’s literature, but authors like Eric Bell are seeking to change that. Bell, an Ambler resident, will be discussing his new juvenile fiction debut ALAN COLE IS NOT A COWARD, (Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins, September 2017) at the Wissahickon Valley Public Library in Blue Bell on Thursday, December 7 at 4:30 PM.

The book concerns a twelve-year-old boy with a secret crush on another boy in his class. He is blackmailed by his older brother and forced to compete in a series of intense challenges—and if he loses, his brother will out him to the whole school.

Bell, who is gay, says he wanted to write a middle grade novel about an LGBT character because it’s so rarely done. “Queer kids need to see themselves in the pages of a book, just like everyone else,” Bell says. ALAN COLE IS NOT A COWARD was named a nominee for the 2018 Rainbow List for GLBTQ Books for Kids and Teens.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet Eric and join the conversation on creativity, storytelling and new voices in children's literature! Parents, students, writers encouraged to attend!
