Course Overview

Medium Voltage (MV) variable frequency drives (VFD’s) are widely applied to plant rotating machinery such as pumps, compressors, fans, and extruders in heavy industries such as oil & gas, water/wastewater, power generation and others. Their safety, reliability and efficiency depends on a complete understanding of their functionality, limitations, technology, interaction with ancilliary equipment and others.

Earn five (5) Professional Pevelopment Hours (PDH) by joining TMEIC experts for a one (1) day technical school on MV motors and drives. Electrical, mechanical, process, & control engineers, equipment specifiers, proposal developers, E&I technicians, facilities engineers, reliability specialists, supervisors, and other stake holders will learn key concepts on how to successfully apply, specify, evaluate, install and maintain MV drives and motors. The MV school is non-commercial and is known for its strong technical and application focus. Since its inception in 2011, the school has impacted 1000+ professionals in over 50 seminars.

Course Agenda

Not only are we taking our MV drive outside, we’re taking it on the road! Stop by and get a hands-on opportunity to view the TMdrive-MVe2 in our new NEMA TYPE 3R rated outdoor enclosure, the TMdrive-Guardian™.

What you WILL NOT Receive
• A commercial about TMEIC during school hours
• Commissioning and Troubleshooting specific TMEIC products
• Sales pitches

What you WILL Recieve
• Technical content containing almost 200 slides
• Relevant technical articles and peer reviewed papers
• Tips, rules of thumb and shortcuts
• Real application stories

Here's what previous attendees say about the school:

“General, non-product specific, knowledge, and cost benefit analysis for different options.
The presenters had excellent knowledge of the subject matter.”

“It was technical and not sales oriented.  Very high density application information with real life examples.  Great training!”

Answers to the most common questions & more:

  • When would I specify a Synchronous motor over an Induction motor?
  • How can I better protect my motor?
  • What type of bearing and enclosure should I choose for fixed-speed, and/or variable-speed operating scenarios?
  • What are the most common types of motor accessories and their costs?
  • What’s so special about an API541 motor?
  • What is a VFD and how does it work?
  • How can I use a VFD for starting a motor and/or transfer to the utility line?
  • When can a VFD be used to save my electricity bill and the hefty demand charge?
  • What are the break points between Air and Water Cooled ASDs?
  • What does Active Front End and Diode Front End ASD mean?
  • How does the VFD mitigate line side harmonics?
  • What are the considerations for applying an VFD to an existing fixed-speed motor?
  • What should I keep in mind when evaluating a direct-on-line vs. soft starter vs. VFD motor starting strategy?
  • Should I buy the motor and VFD as a single package, or can I separate the scope?
  • How are VFDs designed to eliminate water leaks in the system?
  • What is the difference between a voltage source inverter and current source inverter?
  • What are the common points of failure in an VFD and how to mitigate them?
  • How do I manage heat with MV drives and ensure the drive environment?
  • Can I move MV drives outdoors?
  • Do’s and Dont’s of specifying VFDs and motors.
  • What cables should I use with my MV VFD?
  • What is the distance limitation between the motor and VFD and do I need output filters?
  • What drive safety, reliability and maintainability in MV Drives?
  • How are multi-bank drives configured for very large configurations?
  • And more

Presenter Biography:

Manish Verma is a senior sales application engineer with TMEIC in the energy and infrastructure solutions group. He graduated in 2006, 2009 from Virginia Tech with BSEE, MSEE respectively. As a technical consultant, Manish focuses on the application and sales enablement of engineered Medium Voltage power conversion equipment such as VFDs to large electric motors. He is the author of more than a dozen technical papers that have been published in internationally recognized journals and magazines. As a professional speaker, he has presented several tutorials and seminars at distinguished conferences. He is frequently invited to peer review papers for technical conferences, serves on an IEEE sub-committee and is a member of the IEEE 1566 working group. In 2016, Manish was elevated to a Senior Member of IEEE, an honor that is held by only 9% of the 423,000+ professional members.

Jay Park is a Sales Applications Engineer for MV Motors and drives at the TMEIC office in Houston, TX. Jay received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Idaho (US) in 2010. He has since worked in the COG (Chemical, Oil, and Gas) industry including several years at Hyundai Heavy Industries & ABB as an Applications Engineer. He is responsible for preparing proposals for MV induction, synchronous machines, and TMEIC drives.
