FAQs

What does the school programme involve?

Our volunteers attend secondary schools for one classroom period and present an anti-violence lesson to pupils who may be 2nd 3rd or 4th years depending on the school. The lessons are planned out for you and also involve the use of a film produced for the programme and some group work. The normal lesson format is to present to one class of 20-30 pupils. Very occasionally schools request a lecture theatre format and ask us to present to whole year groups. We also sometimes present alongside the police.

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop is for people who want to volunteer with our MAV Schools programme. Ideally you should be a clinician but you don't need to be a doctor. We have members who are doctors, nurses, dentists, paramedics and psychologists, we even have an advocate. The one thing we all have in common is that we have seen the end results of violence in our daily practice and we want to do somehting about it. If you 'd like to take part but are not a clinican please get in touch and let us know what your experience is.

You can also attend the workshop if you are an existing volunteer and would like a refresher.

What are the expectations of us after training?

We would hope that once trained you will feel confident enough to undertake school visits. We already have a lot of requests for the new academic year. We can match you up with more experienced volunteers if you wish to go out with someone on your first visit. We are very aware, because we work in the NHS too, that everyone is very busy so we usually request that volunteers commit to doing two or three visits annually to help spread the load around. Most people try to visit schools that are either near to home or near to work as this seems to make the best use of their time.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The venue for training is in Glasgow's city centre on Sauchiehall Street, easily accessible by bus or train. There are multistorey carparks in Cambridge Street and in Buchanan Galleries. You can park on Sauchiehall Street after 6pm for free but many of the surrounding streets still have parking charges so best to check before leaving your car.

Are refreshements provided?

We will provide tea, coffee, biscuits and a snack (which might be a Street and Arrow sausage roll if you are very lucky)

Will I get CPD/CME?

Yes for those who need CPD/CME we will provide a certifcate. We will require you to fill in a feedback questionnaire to get this-this will be sent to you via Survey Monkey following the course.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please email christine.goodall@glasgow.ac.uk with any questions you have

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No we will have list of those who have registered

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes as long as you let us know beforehand who is attending on your behalf

Can I get more than one ticket?

You can only order one ticket. This is so that we know who is attending but also so that we can send you out a questionnaire after the event. If other people from your organisation wish to come they can register separately.

If the course is full will you be running future events?

Yes if these sessions are full we will add your name to a waitlist incase tickets become available later or for a future event.
