PROGRAM DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE

This two-day course is designed to provide nurses with the tools, confidence and knowledge to successfully complete the Medical-Surgical Nursing Exam. The exam content was used to develop this program. Topics covered from the exam content outlines will include: review of body systems, cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic, gastrointestinal, renal, genitourinary, reproductive, endocrine, hematologic, musculoskeletal, immune and more. Pathophysiology of disease processes including signs and symptoms and treatment modalities will be presented. The nursing process and nursing practice roles in the management of patient care will be discussed through case scenarios and sample questions. All aspects of the Practice Domains will be addressed at the end of Day 2 and strategies for test-taking will also be covered.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Nurses and all healthcare providers who wish to increase their knowledge in providing the most skilled care available for Med/Surg patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This program prepares the learner to:
• Differentiate between the ANCC and the MSNCB exams and determine which will best suit their practice.
• Understand how this exam validates and empowers the nurse’s practice.
• Successfully complete the certification exam with a passing score.

SPEAKER
Cynthia Smith, MSN, RN, CNE, RN-BC
Cindy has been a nurse for over 30 years, practicing in outpatient, medical/surgical, critical-care and long-term care settings. She has held various roles in leadership, management and education. Currently, she works as a clinical nurse educator in Wyoming for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, a 280-bed acute care hospital, where she provides education and staff development for nurses in oncology, medical/ surgical, orthopedics, neurology and infusion. She graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and also holds a master’s degree in adult medical/surgical nursing as a clinical nurse specialist from Georgia Southern University. She is also a certified nurse educator who has authored numerous journal and continuing education articles. Her presentation style is practical and enthusiastic, making use of active learning activities.

AGENDA
Sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m.
Each day includes a onehour lunch (on your own), as well as a morning and afternoon break of 15 minutes each, snacks will be provided. The order of lectures presented and break times may vary according to speaker preference.
