Event description

Description

On Wednesday evening May 1st 2019, Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) is hosting our second annual Medical Career Day. The world of healthcare careers is varied, exciting, and constantly growing in opportunities.

The goal of Medical Career Day is to expose high school students (grades 9-12) to the wide range of opportunities available in healthcare, both clinical and non-clinical alike.

Students will have the invaluable opportunity to spend time, in small groups and one-on-one, with professionals in the field who are very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and insight into the field. Through this experience, students will participate in hands-on learning experiences, make meaningful connections with NWH professionals, and maybe even find their passion!

Career Workshops: Students will be scheduled to attend two, 45-minute workshops (assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis). Workshops choices will include:

1) Medical Ethics: Medical ethics is trying to do the right thing while achieving the best possible outcome for every patient. An ethics committee in a healthcare setting is a group of individuals formed to protect the best interest of patients, address the moral issues surrounding patient care, and help families and patients make decisions by giving impartial recommendations. In this workshop, members of the NWH Ethics Committee (each from a different background and/or clinical specialty) will discuss the basic principles of medical ethics, the role of an ethics committee in healthcare, and work through specific case studies.

2) Bioelectronic Medicine and Engineering: Bioelectronic medicine is a new approach to treat and diagnose disease and injury. This field of medicine uses device technology to read and moderate the electrical activity within the body’s nervous system, opening new doors to real-time diagnostics and treatment options for patients. This field combines expertise in neurophysiology, neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, and bioengineering. In this workshop, learn about this growing new field of medicine and the latest research, discoveries and treatments being developed at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at Northwell Health.

3) Sports/Rehab Medicine: Sports and rehabilitation medicine includes many clinical subspecialties and modalities. Rehabilitation can include neurologic and cognitive, sports and orthopedic, vestibular and post-concussion, cardiopulmonary, and oncological rehabilitation. This exciting field helps a variety of patient populations build strength and stamina, decrease pain, and prevent and heal from injuries – helping patients with all different types of medical conditions and goals to improve mobility, performance, and quality of life. In this workshop, you will learn all about career opportunities for sports/rehab medicine and the latest treatments and technology for this growing area of medicine.

4) Pediatric Medicine: Pediatric medicine is not simply "miniaturized" adult medicine. Doctors who care for these young patients are specially trained to understand the physiological and emotional differences between adults and children and to treat a child’s constantly maturing physical, intellectual, emotional, and social health. In this workshop you will learn about the specialized nature of pediatric medicine from experienced physicians.

Dine and Dish with an Expert (Dinner will be served): Students will have the experience of eating dinner with additional experts to gain further insight into healthcare fields. Experts will be from a variety of fields, ranging from non-clinical careers such as social media marketing and finance, to clinical specialists and physicians. Table assignments will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There is no fee associated with this event, however pre-registration is required – there is a maximum of 100 students who can attend this event.

The deadline for registration is Friday April 12th 2019 at 11:30 pm.
