In 2017, President Barack Obama commuted Oscar López Rivera, who served more than 35 years in federal prison, convicted of seditious conspiracy for his commitment to independence, though he was not accused or convicted of causing harm or taking a life. He was the longest held political prisoner in the history of Puerto Rico. Upon his release, called for by all sectors of Puerto Rican society, he was greeted as a national hero by tens of thousands in Puerto Rico and in Puerto Rican diaspora communities in the US. Since his release, he has been working tirelessly to overcome the impacts of US colonialism in Puerto Rico, most recently evidenced by the inadequate government response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. Now he is coming on his first visit to southern CA, to speak with Puerto Ricans and other communities.
