Event description

Description

What is the future of meat ?

Our western diet is highly reliant on meat and dairy products, and developing countries are increasingly hungry for the same. The current meat production system is however extremely inefficient and resource intensive. Livestock is the world's largest user of land resources. 80% of agricultural land is used for grazing and feed production. The same goes for most of the world’s fresh water. At the same time, meat and dairy also have a significant impact on the environment. Livestock accounts for 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions, and feed production is a major driver of biodiversity loss and soil degradation.

In this context, fixing our problematic protein supply chain and moving towards more sustainable production and consumption is urgent. What place does meat have in a sustainable food system? Can sustainable practices help reduce meat production’s footprint? How can we drive more sustainable consumption patterns? How can innovation and technology help towards a more sustainable protein supply chain?

Join us in an interactive discussion with our guest speakers on various approaches to address “the meat issue”:

  • Manuel Klarmann, Eaternity: Manuel Klarmann is co-founder and CEO of Eaternity, which has developed an innovative solution providing chefs and restaurateurs with useful information, helping them offer climate-friendly, sustainable menus. With small changes in our food choices, we can reduce our carbon impact significantly. Eaternity is putting this into practice working together with 75 restaurants in Zurich.

  • Thomas Rippel: A former economist turned organic farmer. Thomas is an active sustainable farming advocate and practitioner. Thomas promotes novel approaches to cattle management which can help alleviate critical problems like CO2 emissions, soil fertility and food security.

  • Bühler Group: Bühler is a leading Swiss industrial company focused on food processing technology. As part of their effort to develop sustainable solutions for the food industry, Bühler has been focusing on sustainable proteins and looking at ways to better process alternative protein sources. Together with Protix, the leading insect production company, Bühler has founded Bühler Insect Technology to develop scalable, industrial solutions for the rearing, and processing of insects to provide protein primarily for animal feed.

  • blue horizon: blue horizon is a global, mission-driven private investment firm focused on scalable ventures that accelerate the global transition towards sustainable food and agriculture. Their investment portfolio of over 30 companies includes the leading startups disrupting the food business with a new generation of innovative, tech-driven plant-based proteins and “clean meat”, such as Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat and MosaMeat.

This event will be a thematic apéro with short inputs from our guest speakers. The event will be concluded with an exclusive tasting of innovative sustainable protein products

This event is for everyone who is interested in food sustainability and in discussing how to make protein production and consumption more sustainable. Vegetarians, Vegans, Meat eaters all very welcome to join the conversation.
