Event description

Description

Throughout its short history the state of Baja California has quickly, constantly opened its doors to a kaleidoscope of migrant populations from not just the rest of Mexico and Latin America but from around the world, too: Russian Molokans in Ensenada, Chinese laborers in Mexicali and most recently thousands of Haitian refugees in Tijuana.

Join Turista Libre for the inaugural installment of our Meals of Migrants, “safari” suppers that seek to offer a gastronomic sampling of the diverse migrant identities that have made their home in Mexico’s northwestern border region.

We’ll begin with appetizers at Tijuana’s oldest Chinese restaurant, Palacio Royal, open since the 1970s, followed by poul fri and diri kole (fried chicken and beans and rice) at one of the handful of Haitian fonditas to open in the past year. Then we’ll finish up at Chan’s, a local landmark for fine Chinese-Mexican fusion cuisine and cocktails.

Tickets include roundtrip border transportation and courses at each restaurant.

The group meets on the U.S. side of the Pedwest border crossing at the Virigina Avenue Transit center at 11 a.m., with an estimated return to the border at 5 p.m.
