Dr. Jeanette MacLean Budd

Course Title: "Trends in Minimally Invasive Dentistry: Silver Diamine Fluoride, Glass Ionomer Cement, the Hall Technique, and Icon Resin Infiltration”

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the evidence for using SDF and SMART to treat and prevent dental caries
  • Describe the evidence for the Hall Technique
  • Describe the evidence for using Icon Resin Infiltration
  • Review informed consent, coding, and billing
  • Describe case selection, materials, and clinical protocol for each procedure

Course Description:

Part 1: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a revolutionary approach to combating caries in a non-invasive manner. Following a widely publicized 2016 feature in the New York Times, there has been tremendous interest surrounding the use of SDF from patients and dentists. Learn the principles of case selection, informed consent, treatment planning, and a clinical protocol for SDF. Learn how to restore cavities in a quick, effective, and painless way using Glass Ionomer Cement, stainless steel crowns, and SDF, known as Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (SMART) and the Hall Technique. Find out how offering minimally-invasive options like SDF, SMART, and Hall crowns can attract new patients, improve patient satisfaction, and increase internal marketing and word of mouth referrals to your practice.

Part 2: Unsightly congenital enamel defects and acquired white spot lesions can be troublesome for many patients. Historically, these blemishes have been treated with invasive and costly resin bondings and veneers. Dealing with enamel defects can prove particularly troublesome for young patients, which when left untreated, often become a source of embarrassment for the patient. Or worse, some lesions may progress to cavitations, particularly post-orthodontic white spot lesions. Icon Resin Infiltration can improve or even completely reverse the appearance of congenital enamel defects and white spot lesions while preserving tooth structure and repairing the patient’s natural enamel.

Course Title: "Cone Beam CT: The Role of 3D Imaging in Dentistry”

Course Objectives:

  • Explain the basic technology of cone beam CT, associated radiation risks and the clinical applications of CBCT in imaging the maxillofacial region.
  • Discuss various technological features and legal ramifications that should be considered when purchasing a CBCT system.
  • Recognize and describe the anatomy of the maxillofacial region as presented in CBCT images and correlated with their appearance in 2D images.

Course Description:

Cone beam CT has revolutionized the dental field by allowing clinicians to visualize the patient in 3D. This technology has increased productivity and efficiency. In addition, it gives the clinician the opportunity to view more anatomy and pathology than was previously observed with conventional dental radiographs. This course is designed to help the dental practitioner to better understand 3D imaging as well as what to consider when purchasing a CBCT for their office. The course is designed to correlate the appearance of anatomy in 2D and 3D images and help the clinician to recognize the clinical applications in implantology, endodontics, surgery, orthodontics, periodontology, and pathology using a case based approach.
