Event description

Description

CitySquare Team.... It’s that time a year again for MDHA’s annual Point in Time Homeless Count.

When: Thursday night, January 24, 2019, 7.00pm-12.00am

Once a year, along with communities across the country, we count our homeless friends. The Count, a requirement under Federal Law, helps communities understand the extent of homelessness, changing trends, and the measure of their success in making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring.

MDHA is needing volunteers to go out in the community to survey and collect information on our homeless neighbors living on the street. CitySquare will be its own site again this year and MDHA has requested that CitySquare have one main central contact- Krystal Lotspeich to coordinate a separate registration specific to CitySquare volunteers. MDHA doesn’t have CitySquare down as a site on their registration link so MDHA requested that any CitySquare staff volunteers (including friends/family of staff) willing to participate in the point in time count register through CitySquare instead of on MDHA's registration website. Krystal Lotspeich will then provide MDHA a list of those who are signed up to volunteer with CitySquare. CitySquare team volunteers will be broken down into smaller sub-teams on the night of the count. Each team will have one of CitySquare’s experienced Homeless Outreach workers as a team captain.

Who: MDHA is needing volunteers to go out in the community to survey and collect information on our homeless neighbors living on the street. Anyone 18+ can volunteer.

Where: Dallas and Collin Counties. Volunteer deployment sites vary by city. (CitySquare volunteers will deploy from CitySquare’s Opportunity Center to specific assigned locations in Dallas)

If you would like to have your friends and/or family join you on CitySquare’s team then please register them through this link. Updates and more information will be sent to those who register through CitySquare.

If you prefer to volunteer for the count but deploy from one of MDHA's locations then you will need to register through a separate MDHA's registration link.

FAQs

Is there any paperwork I need to fill out?

There always is, right? Please fill out this waiver form, and bring it with you that evening.

Is there anything else I need to do in advance?

If you have a smart device, Apple or Android, download the Counting Us app on it. (Don't worry, we will train you to use it.) You also will need to watch a short YouTube training video.

Is there training provided? Is it required?

Yes and yes. Please watch this short YouTube training video. You will need to watch it prior to the Count. It will give you all of the information you need, as well as answer common questions. We will also give you a quick refresher the evening of the Count.

How will I count?

By the time you finish watching the YouTube training video, that question will be fully answered! The gist of it, though, is pretty simple:

  1. You will arrive at your deployment site (CitySquare);

  2. Once you have arrived, we will check you in. (Please fill out this waiver form, and bring it with you that evening and turn it in when you check in. We will also have the waiver form onsite if you forget to bring yours.

  3. We will train you (this is a refresher, so make sure you have watched the YouTube training video prior to that evening);

  4. Team assignments will be given out and your team will be given a Count Kit, including a map of your route.

  5. You will deploy to your route;

  6. Once you arrive, you will walk your route;

  7. You will conduct an interview (highly preferred) or an observation (if you cannot conduct an interview) of each homeless person you find, using the Counting Us app. Our Count key is: Dallas2019. Please make sure to have your phone battery fully charged so you can conduct interviews via the Counting Us app.

  8. Once you are done, you will text a number we give you with your route number, so we know you have finished, safely.

Will I get reminders and updates about the Count?

Oh, yes.

I still have questions. What should I do?

Once again, the YouTube training video, will likely answer any remaining questions. That said, if you still have questions, please email Krystal Lotspeich, at: klotspeich@citysquare.org
