About this Event

MDCC VIRE TWINNING TRIP – 30 APRIL - 3 MAY 2021

This is a great chance to cycle the lovely Normandy roads via the Normandy Landing Beaches and spend a weekend enjoying French culture.

The MDCC has been twinned for over 40 years with VCB in Vire. MDCC members and their families have enjoyed many exchange visits especially the parties we have had with them. Our annual Totnes-Vire Road Race was established because of this inter-club twinning. The VCB reciprocated with their Prix du Jumelage. This race, with up to 140 riders, gave many of our members the chance to taste racing in France. It has been the springboard for many of our most successful riders.

In recent years the focus of VCB has switched from racing to more social riding. This trip is a chance to establish links at this kind of level.

This trip is mainly aimed at G riders and above, with John Scanlon leading one group and Ken Robertson leading another.    Liz Butler has kindly agreed to lead a group of stronger social riders.

The weekend programme is as follows:-

Friday 30 April: - Car share to Portsmouth to arrive before 9 p.m. Parking is available at the ferry port.    One car will be going over on the ferry as a support vehicle. Passengers will need to carry their own bags onto the ship and they will be loaded into the vehicle the following morning

The ferry sails at 10.45 pm to arrive in (Ouistreham) Caen the following morning at 6.45 am. Two berth cabins have been booked with ensuite shower and toilet. Breakfast can be bought in the ship's restaurant.

Vélo Club du Bocage have booked our accommodation at L’Étape en Forêt in Saint-Sever. Here is the link if you would like to see where we are staying.

We are not asking for dietary requirements other than if you are vegetarian.  Most restaurants will have something suitable for vegetarians, although the choice may be limited.  Any more specific requirements may require you to bring some of your own food along and store it in the car.

Day 1(Saturday 1st May):- Ride from Caen to St Sever (Vire) – Approximately 60 miles, via the Normandy Landing Beaches (UK & Canadian). Dinner will be at the accommodation (cost is not included in the package)

Day 2 (Sunday 2 May): - Rides through the Bocage area with members of the VCB. Rides will be organised for varying abilities. We will be dining in the evening with VCB (cost is not included in the package)

Day 3 (Monday 3 May): - Return ride to Caen for 4.30 pm sailing to Portsmouth with various route options. Ferry docks in Portsmouth at 9.15 pm

The total cost of the trip is £190 per person to include ferry fares and cabins, and bed & breakfast at the accommodation. Breakfast on the ferry is not included.

Please note the cost does not include travel insurance, drinks or any meals bought en-route.

If for any reason you are unable to make the trip after booking and paying, it will be up to you to find somebody to take your place.

This is going to be a great weekend away. It’s worth noting that Vire is in the department of Calvados, famous for its apple brandy!
