Event description
We’re thrilled to have Sadie Stein host our next McNally Jackson Seminar. We will discuss Iris Murdoch’s modern classic, The Sea, The Sea.

About this Event

We will be discussing The Sea, The Sea, by Iris Murdoch. A copy of the book is included in the cost of the ticket.

Classes will be held on 4 consecutive Thursday nights from 7PM to 8PM starting on Thursday, January 7th.

" Yes of course I was in love with my own youth... Who is one's first love?"

With a long and glorious career behind him, playwright Charles Arrowby flees the entanglements of London in order to write his memoirs in seclusion on the wild coast of the North Sea. Here, however, the hidden cruelties of his past catch up with him in ways ever more bizarre, sinister, and dramatic. Winner of the 1978 Booker prize, Murdoch's 19th novel is considered by many to be her finest, both a fitting introduction to her work, and one that repays rereading. (It also contains some of the most eccentric meals in all of fiction). Over the course of four sessions, we'll explore this daring, sublime, occasionally infuriating tale of obsession and self-deceit.

It's one of those books I find myself wishing I had never read so I could have the experience of first diving into its world again - but I have also found that it rewards re-reading. And it's absolutely tailor-made for this moment, dealing as it does with isolation, existential dread, and (not least) preserved foods.

SADIE STEIN is a writer, critic, editor, and the proprietor of the library curation service SOS Books. She has lectured extensively on writing and literature (including a Columbia University class on the role of food in fiction that always included The Sea, The Sea).
