Event description

Description

Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Marin Conservation League and learn how the iconic Marin Headlands were saved for public use.

In the mid 1960's, 2,100 acres of the Marin Headlands were approved for development by the County Board of Supervisors. Funded by Gulf Oil and promoted by a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania developer, "Marincello" was a vast new planned community that would house up to 30,000 residents in hundreds of housing units, including 50 high rise apartment towers, a grand hotel, mile-long mall, and 250 acres of light industry.

A handful of determined citizens ultimately defeated the project and the land was turned over to the National Park Service. Join MCL for this 3 mile out and back hike as we hike through the Marin Headlands and learn how committed community members preserved this beautiful landscape.

Meet at the Rodeo Lagoon parking lot by 9:30am for this out and back 3 mile hike. Wear good hiking shoes, dress in layers, and carry water & a snack.
