Event description
Join us as we explore themes and issues in the series, When They See Us, which tells the important story of the Central Park Five

About this Event

The purpose of this conversation circle is to deepening and expand our connections, understanding, and perception of diverse communities, cultures, languages, and regions not only across the United States, but the world. We used the films to provide a forum for the community to explore topics such as ethnic, economic, political, religious, sexual, cognitive, and developmental diversity themes as they may appear in these films. The group's intention is to help foster an environment of inclusion and respect and to support the Madison College ’s commitment for a welcoming environment. All events are free and open to the public.

The MC Film Critics will explore Netflix Film, When They See Us by Ava DuVernay. In this film, a jogger was assaulted and raped in New York's Central Park, and five young people were subsequently charged with the crime. The quintet, labeled the Central Park Five, maintained its innocence and spent years fighting the convictions, hoping to be exonerated. This limited series spans a quarter of a century, from when the teens are first questioned about the incident in the spring of 1989, going through their exoneration in 2002 and ultimately the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.

What? From 3-4 PM, the group will watch a part of the film, and from 4-5, trained facilitators will lead the group through a film screening, activities, panel discussions, and more crucial conversations.

When? This group will meet on Thursdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, 3-5 PM (four sessions). On October 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2019, we will explore When They See Us. On October 31st, we will explore Oprah Winfrey Presents: When They See Us Now by Oprah Winfrey.

Who will facilitate? The facilitators for this experience include:

  • Anthony Cooper, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Reentry Services at Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development
  • Frank Davis, Madison Organizing in Strength, Equity, and Solidarity for Criminal Justice Reform
