Event description
Author Charles Yu will read from and discuss his novel Interior Chinatown, the 2021 Mayor's Book Club selection

About this event

Charles Yu's National Book Award-winning novel Interior Chinatown follows an Asian American character actor who stumbles into the unexpected spotlight after a lifetime of stereotypical bit roles. Yu weaves together themes of pop culture, immigration and assimilation, and family history in an entertaining and moving novel. At once funny and sincere, Interior Chinatown gives a voice to the complex and crucial stories too often buried or shunted to the side.

Join us for a virtual event with Charles Yu as part of this year's Mayor's Book Club! Yu will read from and discuss Interior Chinatown in this conversation moderated by Austin Asian American Film Festival Executive Director Hanna Huang.

Event is free and open to all.

Charles Yu is the author of four books, including his latest, Interior Chinatown, which won the National Book Award for Fiction and was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. He has been nominated for two Writers Guild of America awards for his work on the HBO series Westworld, and has also written for shows on FX, AMC, Facebook Watch, and Adult Swim. His fiction and non-fiction have appeared in a number of publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Wired, Time and Ploughshares. You can find him on Twitter @charles_yu.

Hanna Huang is a Taiwanese Texan who grew up along the Texas border far away from the comforts of bubble tea shops. Her background in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) educational programming and community organizing eventually led to advocacy for Asian American creatives in the arts. Her love of non-profits, film and AAPI stories found a unique home as the current Executive Director of the Austin Asian American Film Festival in Texas. As a long-time volunteer turned staff member, she finds herself very fortunate to be able to tell her parents that her Asian American studies degree from UT Austin is one she makes use of every day.

The Mayor's Book Club is an annual citywide reading campaign to encourage a community experience through reading, discussion, and exploration of shared books. The Mayor's Book Club is presented by the Library Foundation in partnership with the City of Austin Mayor's Office and the Austin Public Library.
