Event description
A dance-theater work by Maya Billig that transforms The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse into a post-apocalyptic speakeasy.

About this event

Please note our COVID-19 Guidelines: All audience members must wear a mask inside the building. If anyone has a temperature above 100.3 degrees upon arrival they are to be refused entry.

Audience members must provide proof of having been fully vaccinated OR proof of a negative Covid test completed within 72 hours of the day you attend.

We additionally require that all people over the age of two years must wear a mask.

Through contemporary movement and original live instrumental elements blended with electronic sounds, the audience is invited to lounge, strap-in, and take flight. The night is composed of weaving narratives and electric encounters threaded together by notes of surrealism, outerspace, the roaring 20’s, and of course, Miami.

Three accomplished artists blend the historical legacies of house music and sounds of Miami to create the live musical experience: Charles Levine, one half of world-renowned DJ/producer/record label owner duo Soul Clap; Phill Celeste, also known as Life on Planets, skilled vocalist and guitarist; Greg Paulus, member of No Regular Play and a celebrated trumpeter and composer. Four dancers from diverse backgrounds within Miami complete the cast: Maya Billig, Rafael Ruiz, Brianna Campbell, and Marisa Fernandez. Through rigorous artistry and vulnerability, the artists and audience will come together to share the experience of “Gate Closes at 3:05.”

Maya Billig is a Miami-based choreographer, director, and dancer. Rooted in improvisation and research, dance is her primary medium. Her work has been supported by Knight Foundation, Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami Light Project, Locust Projects, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and Deering Estate. She is a recipient of the Miami-Dade Dance Miami Choreographer’s Award and Knight New Work 2020 in support of her latest work “Gate Closes at 3:05.” She is also currently a Jacob’s Pillow Ann & Weston Hicks 2021 Choreographic Fellow. Her dance films have been selected by Crosscuts (Sweden), Prisma Independent Film Awards (Rome), American Dance Festival, and Screendance Miami. Besides receiving her BFA and being classically trained in dance from New World School of the Arts, Maya has trained heavily in contemporary dance, physical theater, and improvisational techniques throughout Europe, Israel, and Australia. A traveler at heart, she has traversed 30 countries and plans to spend her life exploring how to develop sustainable relationships to our planet and each other. She is interested in having her work be an intersection, an inspiration for dialogue, and a refuge.
