- Legacy Exploration -

Guided Conversations for a Conscious Departure

Over the years, Emily has been close to and shared many end-of-life experiences: people of all different ages, circumstances, family/friend dynamics, and feelings about the process of dying. In every case, she has seen how much the care and attention given to personalizing a living will and estate plan matters. Doing so offers comfort, direction, support, and love to the people who must make decisions at a time when they are most in grief and often least able.

Wrestling with end-of-life decisions is not easy. Emily’s process for legacy exploration transforms what can be challenging into an experience of clarity, creativity, and comfort. The result is a legacy plan that is uniquely yours. Emily helps her clients and their teams develop a legacy plan that is tied directly to their goals, values, and passions that expresses who and what has made their lives worth living.

"I am a retired estate planning attorney and recently hired Emily.  Although I have the legal and technical knowledge, Emily's personal experience in administering different types of charitable "vehicles" was incredibly helpful. She was a wonderful and supportive sounding board to help me clarify other estate planning issues, including my healthcare directive. I have watched many clients struggle with resolving personal estate planning issues and I wish there had been an "Emily" to whom I could have referred them." – Susan York Janin, Estate Lawyer & Client.

GUEST SPEAKER: Emily Scott- Guide, Facilitator, Confidant at Emily Scott AND

Emily started Emily Scott AND when she personally experienced the need for professionals to help with her emotional side of money during a life transition.  Her earlier professional career includes years on Wall Street, the retail industry, and marketing consulting.  Since 1997, she has focused her time and energy on philanthropy and non-profit boards. Emily was a founding board director of the Park City Community Foundation and served as Vice Chair and Grants Chair. She has been on many non-profit boards including the Simmons College Board of Trustees (where she held numerous Chair/Executive Committee positions), V-Day, SF AIDS Foundation, KQED, and Fostering Media Connections.  Emily was a principal in the California College Pathways Collaborative. She chaired her family’s foundation for 15 years. Currently, Emily serves on the advisory committees of Target Zero, and Cynthia’s Sisters.  Her 25 years of personal experience in philanthropy and managing a family office, Emily fully appreciates the nuances and pressures that having a high net worth can bring.

In addition to being a board member and grantor, Emily has been actively engaged in her philanthropy.  She believes in the value of incorporating her time, treasure, and talent in all that she does.  Her partial list of accomplishments includes raising large sums of money by participating in the SF/LA AIDS RIDE, writing a book, walking the Camino de Santiago, journeying to the Democratic Republic of Congo to raise money for City of Joy, and volunteering in the refugee camps in Lesvos and Athens. She is a passionate advocate of humanitarian endeavors, civil discourse, and is actively engaged in the pursuit of truth and reconciliation as the acknowledgment  of the racial injustice in the U.S.A.

Emily presented at TEDx Sonoma on philanthropy  ("Evolution of a Passionaholic") and authored Tails of Devotion, A Look at the Bond between People and Their Pets. Ms. Scott has advised on and taught grant making, development, and board governance.

She is a member of AiP (Advisors in Philanthropy), and PPI (Purposeful Planning Institute), and is training to be a certified Financial Transitionist.  Emily holds an MBA from Cornell University, a BA in management from Simmons College, and is an alumna of The Philanthropy Workshop.
