Talk one: Security & Usability: Moving Beyond Binaries

Security and usability share a common property: they are concepts that cannot be defined independent from humans. Whether something is secure depends on the threat model of the person using your service; and similarly, the usability of a product is very different for different people. This talk highlights this idea by looking at different designs of key handling in common encryption apps, and encourages both developers and designers to move away from binary thinking.

Speaker: Eileen Wagner

Eileen is Program Manager at Simply Secure, a non-profit that provides professional education for security and privacy in user experience design. Besides researching and consulting on usability and security issues, she also advises civic tech teams on strategy and communications. She previously campaigned for transparency at the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. There she helped establish the first public funding program for open source projects in Germany, the Prototype Fund.

Talk two: The Importance of Bad Design

Bad design is unequivocally as important as good design. Bad design challenges us to think about why a design is "bad" and what would be "good" as an alternative. Some design even should be "bad" in order to serve its purpose. Perceptions are tied to both good and bad design, and it's the spectrum that makes us appreciate design even more.
