Event Details

ABOUT VCPEA  Since 1993, VCPEA has been a leader in promoting awareness and training on behalf of Virginia's abused, neglected and exploited adults. We are a coalition of individuals and agency representatives committed to improving the lives of adults in Virginia who are older or have a disability. VCPEA hosts the only statewide conference focusing on adult abuse. 

CONFERENCE AND LOCATION  The 24th VCPEA Annual Conference will be held at the Kingsmill Resort & Conference Center from May 30-June 1, 2018The conference is open to professionals in a variety of disciplines who provide services to older adults, and are interested in increasing their awareness of the issues of adult abuse, neglect or exploitation.

CONFERENCE THEME and TOPICS  Our conference theme is Respect and Protect. In promoting this theme, featured topics will include:

  • Benefits racketeering presented by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI)
  • Developing prevention programs
  • Financial scams
  • Reframing society's vision of adult abuse
  • Ageism & language
  • The opiod epidemic
  • Retirement planning (special session)
  • Documentary film: Assisted Living by Dan Hunt (award-winning documentary of an elderly man with mild dementia who battles to keep his money, dignity and independence)
  • Documentary film: Gen Silent by Stu Maddux (award-winning documentary following the lives of six LBGTQ older adults who must make the decision between concealing their sexuality and living in the long-term healthcare system)
  • Evidence in elder abuse and neglect cases presented by Dr. Michael Hays, Assistant Chief Medical Examiner (Commonwealth of Virginia OCME)

The conference also offers networking opportunities with others who care about vulnerable adults. 

PIC credits will be available for law enforcement. Certificates of attendance will be provided for all other attendees.

ACCOMODATIONS  Situated along the James River, Kingsmill is a AAA Four Diamond resort and is offering a limited number of rooms at the government rate of $104/night + taxes plus $8/day for on-site parking. The noted rate will be honored three days before and three days after the conference. One night's lodging will be charged to your credit card seven days prior to the start of the conference. Please note that rooms must be cancelled at least seven days prior to arrival. Rooms at Kingsmill must be reserved by May 7, 2018 to receive the conference rate.
