ABOUT VCPEA:  Since 1993, VCPEA has been a leader in promoting awareness and training on behalf of Virginia's abused, neglected and exploited adults. We are a coalition of individuals and agency representatives committed to improving the lives of adults in Virginia who are older or have a disability. VCPEA hosts the only statewide conference focusing on adult abuse.

CONFERENCE AND LOCATION:  The 26th Annual VCPEA Conference will be held at the Kingsmill Resort & Conference Center from May 27-29, 2020. The conference is open to professionals in a variety of disciplines who provide services to older adults, and are interested in increasing their awareness of the issues of adult abuse, neglect or exploitation.

 CONFERENCE THEME and TOPICS:

Our 2020 theme is Solving the Puzzle: Joining Together to Protect Elder Virginians. The opening speakers, Mr. Stu Maddux and Mr. Joseph Applebaum, are internationally recognized filmmakers who will offer a premier showing of their latest production, All The Lonely People, which documents a handful of people from different life-stages who each are battling chronic loneliness and isolation and explores the causes of their isolation.  The health-related consequences of loneliness are as profound as those caused by smoking and obesity. The state of “loneliness” is now considered a world-wide epidemic, occurring as frequently as happiness among millions around the world and from all walks of life.

Featured sessions include:

  • Accessing Financial Support for Crime Victims
  • Assessing Capacity
  • Ethics and Vulnerable Adults: Implications for Research & Practice
  • Evidence Collection in Elder Abuse Cases
  • Family Conflicts in Caregiving Financial Exploitation
  • Tools for Addressing Elder Abuse in Virginia's Rural Areas
