May 19 Jazz in AZ Party @ The Nash featuring Papa John DeFrancesco on B3
Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (MST)
'Papa' John DeFrancesco began playing the Hammond B3 Organ in the Buffalo, New York area in 1959 after seeing Jimmy Smith live. In the late '70's, he put aside his successful performing career -- playing with the likes of Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, and Houston Person -- to concentrate on raising his son, Joey DeFrancesco. 'Papa' John must have done something right, as son Joey started touring as a member of Miles Davis' band at the age of 17.
With Joey grown and on his own, in the mid-'90's 'Papa' John resumed his own performance and recording career. His most recent album, A Philadelphia Story, released in 2011 on the Savant label, is “...smoking B-3 jazz with kick, swagger, and funky butt grooves. It marks the welcome return of a master jazzman,” says AllMusic.com.
See this formidable jazzman live and up close at Jazz in AZ Monthly Sunday Party @ The Nash. He’ll be groovin’ on his B3 in the company of 3 super-gifted musicians: Shea Marshall-sax, Ralph Carrasco -guitar, and Jabari-drums.
Admission: $15 general, $12 seniors, $10 JiA members (Lifetime Members free), $5 students with ID, under 12 free
