MATTER is pleased to welcome Dr. John Noseworthy, the president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, for a conversation about how Mayo Clinic is leading in the transition to value-based care, and embracing new technologies to improve outcomes. Dr. James Madara, CEO of the American Medical Association and a MATTER board member, will lead the conversation, which will include perspectives on how the new Administration’s decisions may influence healthcare decision making.

Dr. John H. Noseworthy is president and chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit organization operating in five states that is dedicated to medical care, research, and education.
Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Noseworthy served as chair of Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurology, medical director of the Department of Development, and vice chair of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Executive Board.
During his tenure as CEO, Dr. Noseworthy and his leadership team have implemented a plan to ensure that Mayo Clinic remains a trusted resource for patients amid a rapidly changing healthcare environment – extending Mayo’s mission to new populations, providing care through more efficient delivery models, and increasing the personalization and immediacy of healthcare for all people. Examples of new initiatives include a proton beam cancer therapy program with two treatment centers – one in Phoenix and one in Rochester, Minn. – and development of a Mayo Clinic-affiliate network of high-quality medical practices throughout the country.

James L. Madara, MD, serves as the CEO and executive vice president of the American Medical Association, the nation’s largest physician organization. He holds the academic title of adjunct professor of pathology at Northwestern University.
Since taking the reins of the AMA in 2011, Dr. Madara has helped sculpt the organization’s long-term strategic plan. As an extension of this vision, he now also serves as chairman of Health2047 Inc., an independent, design-driven innovation firm based in San Francisco whose mission is to help advance the AMA’s goal of improving the health of the nation. He also serves as a board member of MATTER, the Chicago-based healthcare technology incubator and innovation hub.
Prior to arriving at the AMA, Dr. Madara spent the first 22 years of his career at Harvard Medical School, receiving both clinical and research training, serving as a tenured professor and as director of the NIH-sponsored Harvard Digestive Diseases Center. Following 5 years as chair of pathology at Emory, Dr. Madara served as dean of the medical school and CEO of the hospitals at the University of Chicago, bringing together the university’s biomedical research, teaching and clinical activities. While there, he oversaw the renewal of the institution’s biomedical campus and engineered significant new affiliations with community hospitals, teaching hospital systems, community clinics and national research organizations.
Dr. Madara also served as senior advisor with Leavitt Partners, a health care consulting and private-equity firm founded by former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt.
