Event description

Description

View MATTER's new art installation and participate in a gallery walk featuring art from the 'The Art of Science' program at the University of Illinois. Music, cocktails and light hors d'oeuvres included with free admission.

About the art:

The Art of Science program, created by the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB) at the University of Illinois, is a celebration of common ground between science and art. Each exhibit comprises images from IGB’s research portfolio, enhanced to highlight the beauty and fascination encountered daily in scientific endeavors. Since its inception ten years ago, members of the IGB have striven to make it a place “where science meets society,” and the Art of Science program gives the opportunity for scientists and members of the public to unite in appreciation of the diverse, unexpected, and breathtaking views offered by the study of the natural world.

The artwork in this exhibit includes subjects from the microscopic to the holistic, from the physical to the abstract; the breadth of scientific endeavor represented reflects the scope of genomic research at the IGB, which includes work in the areas of health, technology, food and fuel security, and environmental conservation. Each image tells a story of a collaborative effort to make the world a better place, showcasing the IGB’s large-scale project work on topics that include food security, cancer treatment, genome editing, and universal features of life.
