Event description

Description

The population of our planet is growing and becoming wealthier and with little new land available with which to grow food the pressure on food production, already high, is set to increase. The drive towards more intensive agriculture to produce more food is affecting the environment and our planet’s climate which, in turn, affects our ability to grow food. This is, however, only one of a myriad of issues affecting our food system, the mechanisms of which need to be understood before we can start tackling this important issue.

The global food system is complex and is a balance between supply and demand for food as well as the inputs required for growing food. Much research is being done in individual aspects of this complex system but this assumes that each facet of the food system can be separated into individual isolated units. We believe that this assumption is not valid as the food system consists of many interacting parts and to understand how the system works and how we can increase food security we need to include these interactions into our current models.

To initiate work and research into understanding the food system as a whole and how each dimension interacts with others we are proposing a 3-day residential workshop at the University of Stirling to bring together 20-25 mathematicians and mathematical modellers with an interest and experience of modelling and analysing the various facets of the food system to start to mathematically describe how each facet interacts. The workshop will run as a series of brainstorming and discussion sessions where the aim is to explore and develop the outlines of a series of papers, the specific goal of this workshop is to produce 5-6 abstracts for papers that will be included in this edition.

This workshop is part funded by the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications.
