Description

MSIS is a 2-year Mathematics Specialist program. The program is a coherent sequence of five Institutes designed to expand teachers’ understanding of the Common Core Standards, how students learn that content, evidence of student understanding, and how to work with peers in a mentoring relationship. Each Institute consists of three full-day face-to-face workshops with follow-up online components. This program is for K-10 teachers who are passionate about teaching and want to further develop their mathematical knowledge, their teaching skills, and their ability to mentor and support the professional development of other teachers. Upon completion of the five institutes, participants will be awarded a Math Specialist certificate from the Office of Overseas Schools AERO Project.

MSIS is for Math Teachers with:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • A valid Education Training License.
  • Employment at an international school for a minimum of 3 years.
  • A letter of recommendation from a current school administrator indicating a two-year commitment to the program.

TWO-YEAR SYLLABUS

YEAR 1 - INSTITUTE 1:
Numbers and Operations
The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Numbers and Operations progressions of the Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to ways of representing numbers, relationships between numbers, number systems, the meanings of operations and how they relate to one another, and computation within the number system as a foundation for algebra.

YEAR 1 - INSTITUTE 2
Algebra and Functions
The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Algebra and Functions progressions of the Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to the transition from arithmetic to algebra, working with quantitative change and the description of and prediction of change.

YEAR 1 - INSTITUTE 3
Assessment - Analysis of Teaching and Learning in the Mathematics Classroom
The focus is on extending the ability to assess conceptual and procedural understanding using ongoing and cumulative assessment methods. Participants will examine current research related to assessment to direct and improve instructional practices, explore the way in which different assessment methods can be aligned with specific learning targets, develop skills in creating specific clarifying and probing questions, learn to distinguish between what students know and the way students show what they know and incorporate knowledge of students’ thinking into instructional planning.

YEAR 2 - INSTITUTE 4 - THIS IS THE ONLY INSTITUTE OFFERED ON MARCH 19-21 AT AISC
Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning
The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning progressions of the Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to the basic number progressions in fractions and rational numbers, decimals and percents, and ratios and proportions to develop both rational number concepts and skills and proportional reasoning.

YEAR 2 – INSTITUTE 5
Geometry and Measurement
The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Geometry and Measurement progressions of the AERO/Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to the foundations of informal measurement and geometry in one, two and three dimensions. The van Hiele model for geometric earning will be used as the framework for how children build their understanding of length, area, volume, angles and geometric relationships.

OUR PRESENTER
Erma Anderson has worked with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) as Director of International Programs. With NSTA, Ms. Anderson worked closely on a number of projects including Project Manager of the Scope, Sequence and Coor-dination of Secondary School Science. Ms. Anderson has considerable experience developing and facilitating workshops with formal and informal mathematics and science education entities such as Kidsnet, National Institute of Medicine, United States Forestry Service, to name a few and school districts throughout the United States. Currently, Ms. Anderson is a science/mathematics consultant with the Office of Overseas Schools AERO project and Near East South Asia (NESA). She is a consultant for Vkidz, an institution dedicated to improving education through pioneering the use of technology to apply time-proven education techniques in new ways.
