Event description

Description

As part of the exhibition Materiality on Holy Island, artist Mike Collier of WALK * will be leading a walk on 23rd September 2017. This will be a brisk walk of approx. seven kilometres. Accompanied by natural historian Keith Bowey, we will, together with the artists (Graham Patterson, Ruth Brenner, Chun-Chao Chou, Alexandra Hughes, Lindsay Duncanson and Helen Pailing) explore the relationship between culture and nature on this windswept island as we walk between the artworks; through the dunes, along the coast and into the village beneath the Castle. See the following link for further information about the show.

Event details: Meet at the Snook car park at 10.00 (see link below).

We will reach the Crossman Hall by 14.00 in time for a live performance, Wild Affections, by Alexandra Hughes.

Please be aware that there will be no toilet break on this walk of approx. four hours. There are toilets at Beal service station, (just as you turn in to the Island from the A1). The Crossman Hall in the village will be open from 09.30 and there are also public toilets next door, close to the Lindisfarne Mead Factory / shop.

You should come prepared for walking though sand dunes and rocky shorlines and be aware that the weather on the island can change quickly. Please wear stout shoes and bring appropriate rainwear and warm clothing.

Holy Island is A TIDAL ISLAND: It is linked to the mainland by a long causeway. Twice a day it is cut off as tides cover the road. On the 23rd September we are advised that the causeway can be safely crossed between the hours of 09.30 and 16.00. However, you are advised to remain vigilant if crossing near these ‘extremities’.

Places on this walk are limited so please book in advance.

* WALK (Walking, Art, Landscape and Knowledge) is a research centre based at the University of Sunderland exploring how we creatively engage with the world as we walk through it.
