Description

Graham Hollick (Stitch by Stitch) and Fernando Laposse (Totomoxtle Project), moderated by Edwina Ehrman (Curator of Fashioned From Nature, V&A) explore their respective projects that use indigenous plant species and processes to create contemporary design products with a positive social impact.

Part of 'Material Consequences' - the theme for the 2018 programme in the Brompton Design District during the London Design Festival; questioning and rethinking materials and waste. Curated by Jane Withers Studio.

Stitch by Stitch are creators of handmade textiles made in India and Nepal, and are driven by sustainable practice and preserving the livelihoods of the skilled artisans. During London Design Festival 2018, as part of Brompton's 'Material Consequences' programme Stitch by Stitch present the exhibition ‘From Rain to Loom’. The project highlights the Khamir Kala Cotton Initiative, which is a reinterpretation of an old craft value chain reconfigured for the modern marketplace.

During LDF 2018 and as part of Brompton's 'Material Consequences' programme London-based Mexican designer Fernando Laposse exhibits developments of his Totomoxtle project, a new veneer material for interior surfaces and furniture that harnesses the brilliant spectrum of colour revealed in the husks of native Mexican corn.

Edwina Ehrman is a Senior Exhibition Curator at the V&A, with a specialism in nineteenth century fashion and textiles and the history of London fashion. Edwina has worked for two of Britain's leading collections of fashion and textiles, the V&A and the Museum of London. She has curated many exhibitions and gallery displays, most recently the ‘Fashioned from Nature’ exhibition at the Vcitoria and Albert Museum. This exhibition presents fashionable dress alongside natural history specimens, innovative new fabrics and dyeing processes, inviting visitors to think about the materials of fashion and the sources of their clothes.
