Event description

Description

Matangi/Maya/M.I.A is a 2018 biographical documentary film about the life of Grammy nominated British-Sri Lankan singer-songwriter-rapper-producer-political activist Matangi Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A. Directed by Steve Loveridge who is a longtime friend and associate, his non-linear style approach to the documentary which profiles her life going forward and backward in time makes sense for M.I.A, whose art and political stance continues to both intrigues and confuse people in equal measures.

Using over two decades of archival footage that was provided by M.I.A, Loveridge engages the viewer with his friend’s journey from being a daughter of Tamil resistance fighter during the Sri Lankan Civil War, to a refugee, immigrant and eventually to stardom. M.I.A shows her multiple cultural and artistic identities first hand as she explains who she is and who she is not, her thoughts and experiences as a first-generation immigrant/refugee. She also introduces the viewer to the political complexities of Sri Lanka.

Join us on Saturday March 9, as the Queens Historical Society hosts a film screening of the winner of the 2018 World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.
