Mastering Light with Dan Ostergren

Join renowned photographer Dan Ostergren for an immersive four-hour photography workshop focused on mastering both natural light techniques and strobe lighting. This hands-on experience is designed for photographers who already have a solid understanding of their camera settings and are looking to enhance their skills in manipulating light to create stunning images. Participants will begin with guided instruction before engaging in practical applications with models in the studio, all under Dan's expert oversight, and conclude with a Q&A session.

Location: Asher Rain Studio, located inside Memory Den, 499 SE 2nd Ave, Portland, OR 97214

Introduction (15 minutes)

• Welcome and overview of the workshop
• Participant introductions, model introductions
• Brief discussion on the pivotal role of lighting in photography

Natural Light Techniques (1 hour 30 minutes)

- Instruction by Dan (45 minutes):

• Exploring natural light: qualities, direction, and the best times of day to shoot
• Techniques for mastering natural light: direct sunlight, shade, and shadows
• Advanced composition strategies: framing, storytelling, and emotional resonance through light

- Practical Exercise (45 minutes):

•   Participants photograph in the studio, applying learned techniques with an emphasis on creativity and personal style

Strobe Lighting Techniques (1 hour 30 minutes)

- Instruction by Dan (45 minutes):

• Overview of strobe lights: different types, setup, and features
• Creative applications of strobe lighting: creating dramatic effects

- Practical Exercise (45 minutes):

•  Hands-on practice with strobe lighting setups, guided by Dan, allowing for experimentation with lighting scenarios

Student-Led Shooting with Oversight (1 hour)

• Participants collaborate in small groups or pairs

• Guided shooting sessions where they implement both natural and strobe lighting techniques
• Dan circulates among groups, providing personalized feedback and expert assistance

Q&A Session (30 minutes)

• An open floor for participants to ask questions and discuss their experiences
