Master Class—Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project

**Open to GCU Dance Majors, GCU Dance Club, Art, Music students, and Prospective GCU Students**

Esther Baker-Tarpaga is a performance artist and choreographer. She co-directs Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project, a transnational performance company based in Burkina Faso and Philadelphia. Her performance work has recently toured to Tamadia Arts Festival France; BaliSpirit Festival; InOut Festival Bobo Dioulasso; CECUT Tijuana; LabBodies Baltimore; Middlebury College; Panoply Performance Laboratory in New York City; Rosekill in Rosendale, New York; the Wassaic Project Summer Festival in Wassaic, New York; and the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her dance films have screened internationally, and she is a published scholar. Ms. Baker-Tarpaga has taught at University of the Arts, The Ohio State University, and was a Grant Wood Fellow at University of Iowa. She toured with David Rousseve/REALITY and collaborated with Guillermo Gomez-Pena/La Pocha Nostra. An artist-in-residence at Marin Headlands in 2013, Ms. Baker-Tarpaga is also a recipient of a New York Live Arts Suitcase Fund, BETHA Grant, and was a U.S. cultural envoy in Guinea, Botswana, and South Africa. She is a member of Philly Dance for Justice and co-founder of Meredith School Anti-Racist Group. Ms. Baker-Tarpaga has a B.A. from Bowdoin College and an M.A. and M.F.A. from World Arts and Cultures UCLA.

Dancer, choreographer, and musician Olivier Tarpaga is a dance lecturer at the Lewis Center for the Arts and a music lecturer for the Department of Music of Princeton University. Mr. Tarpaga, a Lester Horton Award recipient, is the founder and artistic director of the internationally acclaimed Dafra Drum and Dafra Kura Band and co-founder of the Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project. He danced with David Rousseve/REALITY from 2006 to 2010. He is a recipient of numerous major grants including National Dance Project (NDP) touring support for his full-length work Declassified Memory Fragment, the New York Live Arts Suitcase Fund, a Chime Mentorship Fellowship with David Rousseve as his mentor, the Durfee Foundation ARC, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Flourish Foundation.
