Event description

Description

Spoken Word Poetry Master class: is an intensive 4hr Creative Writing class for students of all levels (maybe you're already a writer and want to hone your skills? Or maybe you've always wanted to try this medium but have been unsure how the structure and format works?). This Master Class is limited to 25 students (in order to offer one-on-one attention and sufficient time for workshop and feedback).

In this 4hr Master Class, Writers will be expected to conceive, edit and chisel away a spoken word poem throughout the workshop. Students will be exposed to writing activities that explore spoken word poetry structure, creative voice, and finding story. Students will be introduced to the original works of Spoken word poets (from 1960s-present), Each student in the workshop will be guided in completing a rough draft of a poem they feel represent their heart, and worldview. The workshop will also provide take-home assignments that include unconvetional "homework" and writing prompts to further the student's creative expression. The workshop will encourage students towards the medium of creative writing and spoken word poetry. The Master Class will be divided into 5 parts: 1) Brief Introduction: A brief introduction to the Medium of Spoken Word. Some examples of work by successful poets throughout the years. 2) Self/Awareness - Writing Activities: to release the subconscious and write in an honest and genuine voice, that is unique to each student. 3) Structured Spoken Word Prompts: chosen to help students tell stories in this medium 4) Workshop: using the workshop structure, students will share their poems with one another, receive honest feedback, and ideas. 5) Editing/Chiseling: Students will be given time to edit/chisel and fine-tune their draft based on workshop feedback. And should leave the Masterclass with a complete written poem they feel confident about, as well as the skills to do practice this art form at home, at a coffee shop, or anywhere in the world you find yourself wanting to be creative.
