Esquina Tango and the Center for American Music in the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas present
**Class open to both dancers and musicians.

About the class:

Class is open to both dancers and musicians. The objective of the workshop is to set up a bridge between musicians and dancers from the analysis and development of some basic and determined tools about the technical work of a Typical Tango Orchestra with the purpose of apply them to the dance and to get a better musical appreciation and superior understanding of the style and the gender.

Part 1: “Juan D’arienzo and his Typical Orchestra”
• Historical Tour about life and work of the founder of the most popular Tango Orchestra.
• Musical characteristics, Icons and musical evolution of Juan D’arienzo Orchestra through the time.
• Orchestra’s style development. Influence in Tango and society. Musical Settings.

Part 2: “The Typical Orchestra”
• Morphology and functioning of "La Juan D’arienzo" Orchestra from inside. Instruments, characteristics and roles.
• Comparative particularities of Juan D’arienzo style: “Marcato”, “The 4th string”, “Variations”, Singers”. Soloists' role and group of instruments in the orchestra. Musical language appreciation.

Part 3: “Orchestra and Dancer Conjunction”
• Juan D’arienzo Style from feet. Interpretation tools and musical appreciation. Dialog between body and music, between couple and orchestra: a dialogue of a three.
• Applied tools of musical appreciation on the couple. Interpretation of the orchestra for a dialogue of a three.

Part 4: “Live Milonga”
Putting the above into practice. Appreciation of what was developed in the workshop in conjunction with the music of La Juan D'arienzo
The workshop is oriented to that musicians that are looking for a better understanding of Juan D’arienzo’s style from the structure and musical technique and dancers that are looking for interpret and enjoy in a better way the music of “El rey del Compás” and to all those who want to know with a greater depth another aspect of the style created by an icon of our always valid Tango: Juan D’arienzo.
