Description

BE A PART OF HISTORY:

During the first two weeks of October, Mass Bail Out will pay bail for hundreds of women and children who are currently incarcerated on Rikers Island. To achieve this, we're seeking volunteers.

Each Mass Bail Out Volunteer will have one shift, on one day, during which they will commute to a New York City jail, armed with a check provided by Mass Bail Out and all the information required to bail out two of their fellow New Yorkers.

To become a Mass Bail Out Volunteer, sign up for one of our Volunteer Trainings!

MASS BAIL OUT

People who can’t afford to post bail are paying with their lives. Reforms are no longer enough, it is time to end cash bail and pre-trial detention. This system unjustly punishes the poor and disproportionately impacts Black and Brown people. Every day tens of thousands of people, including a growing number of women, children, LGBTQIA, and differently-abled, are languishing in jail simply because they are too poor to make bail. Even a few days in jail can ruin a person’s life. They may lose their job, their family may lose housing and some may even lose custody of their children.

Inspired by the movement to end bail nationwide, from the #CLOSErikers campaign, local bail funds, and the visionary Black Love Bailout actions, Mass Bail Out will be the largest bail out action held to date and a truly historic moment in the fight to end mass incarceration. Mass Bail Out is a collaborative effort to free four hundred women jailed at Rose M. Singer Center and fifty children detained at the Robert N. Davoren Complex on the notoriously violent Rikers Island. The Mass Bail Out will demonstrate the truth of our inalienable human right: No one should be held in jail simply because they cannot afford the ransom on their freedom.

JOIN US

This action will be powered by hundreds of volunteers who will post bail for 400 women and children and welcome New Yorkers home . Together we will show what is possible when we begin closing down cages and reinvesting in communities.
