MASCOT (Mathematics Augmentation Series: Cultivating Optimal Teaching) is a three-week, half-day academic program designed to serve students who have high math ability or are identified as having potential for learning advanced mathematics. Students focus on mathematical reasoning and problem-centered learning with irrational numbers, probability, intuitive algebra and computer-based geometric exploration.
In MASCOT, Problem-Centered Learning (PCL) is the primary strategy used. Tasks are selected, students work in small groups and then present their solutions to the class for discussion. In PCL, the teacher is a facilitator of student learning. Portfolios of each student's work will be used in the assessment process.
DATES: June 26 through July 14, 2017, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM
TUITION: The tuition for MASCOT is $260.00 per student. Partial scholarships available with proof of income.
ELIGIBILITY: MASCOT is open to students who:
- are currently in grade six or grade seven,

- have academic potential, as measured by standardized test scores,
- have a recommendation from a coordinator of gifted and talented education or a teacher of mathematics, and
- have parental permission to participate.
GOALS: Students will:
- become curious and creative about mathematics,
- work collaboratively, and
- communicate mathematics effectively.
SCHEDULE: Each student will be part of a class of 20 students who will study together for three weeks. The students will ineract in a smaller group and focus on problem-solving in triads. Each class will be instructed by a team of two teachers.
