Event Details

The 9th Annual Cambridge Day of Service organized by Many Helping Hands 365 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event is FREE and open to the public. Doors to all the locations will open at 2pm! There will be no Weclome Gathering due to the inclement weather.

All ages are welcome to help with projects that benefit children, teens and adults in need. Join us for an afternoon of hands-on service projects! Make fleece scarves and blankets for homeless children and adults. Make Valentines for elders and veterans. Sort food, winter clothing, books and toiletries for people in need and more!

Come spend an afternoon making a difference in the lives of others.

Don’t come empty handed! Please ring a can of food to help stock our city food pantries, gently used winter clothing to donate or a children’s book for someone in need.

We need everyone’s helping hands!

Many people. Many needs. Many Helping Hands.

Many thanks to the many organizations, city departments, businesses and individuals who help make Cambridge MLK Day of Service possible. Many thanks to Randy Goodman for this great photo!

Can I bring a group from my company, church, school, sports team, Girl Scout troop, etc?

Absolutely! Register under Group Registration with the name of the Group Leader, contact info, the number of people in your group (an estimate is fine) and your group affiliation (i.e. East End House, Broad Institute, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Beth El Temple Center, Girl Scouts, etc). We do not need the names of everyone in the group.

Send all group questions to

Whom does our service benefit?

Your helping hands help more than 10,000 children, teens, and adults in Cambridge and beyond (including Somerville, Boston, and Lowell).

At the 2018 MLK Day of Service, volunteers made more than 600 fleece scarves and blankets for homeless children, teens and adults; more than 4000 Valentines for isolated elders, veterans, troops overseas and homeless parents, 2100 activity kits for children waiting in hospital emergency rooms and more than 1500 bags of toiletries for homeless teens and adults. We collected and distributed more than 400 grocery bags of food to 15 local food pantries, half a ton of winter clothes to shelters and dozens of bags of children's' books to local literacy programs. We reached more than 8,000 vulnerable children, teens, and adults in our communities.

Can we bring kids?

YES! We've designed the projects to encourage even the littlest hands to be able to participate. We have had children as young as 2 and elders 90+ lend their generous hands in service. Children do need to be accompanied by an adult who can work alongside them.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The best way to come is by MBTA. We're in Central Square on the Red Line. The #1 Mass Ave bus stops across from City Hall. There are public parking lots nearby as well.

Where can I contact the organizer with questions?

You can email us at We'll be in touch soon!

Can I make a monetary donation?

Yes! All donations go to help pay for the supplies we use at MLK Day of Service. You can make a donation in the "Supporter" category on the Registration page. Thank you for your generosity!

Is there a T shirt?

Why yes, we sure do! Order yours here by February 1st so you will have it in hand by February 15th! Proceeds benefit Many Helping Hands 365.

I have ideas for you!

We'd love to hear from you! Email us at

Can I help before or after MLK Day?

We can always use more helping hands. Some examples of how you can help (1) help with planning before MLK Day, (2) help with cutting fleece, putting up posters, delivering collection boxes, (3) help manage projects on MLK Day, (4) help finish up sewing blankets and scarves after MLK Day, and (5) help deliver all the wonderful things that volunteers make and sort on MLK Day.

We also need social media help and graphic design. Email us at

Is it true we can register to vote at MLK Day?

Yes! if you are not registered, we can help you do that! We have a table and volunteers at City Hall. The best way to serve your community is to participate in our democracy!

Many Helping Hands 365

Many Helping Hands 365

Many Helping Hands 365 (MHH365) mobilizes volunteers to build and sustain an equitable community for all in Cambridge. We want to make it easy for you to find ways to volunteer and make a difference— alone, with friends, family or co-workers, once or weekly. MHH365 is a volunteer-created and managed organization.

In 2018, at the 8th Annual Cambridge MLK Day of Service more than 3,200 people came to spend the afternoon volunteering to helping thousands in need in our community.  Since 2011, thousands of volunteers have collected thousands of bags of food, hundreds of children’s books, thousands of pounds of winter clothing and made almost 3,000 blankets and scarves, more than 11,000 ER activity kits, more than 10,000 toiletry kits, and more than 20,000 Valentine’s Day cards.

Our aim is to raise public awareness of the year-round volunteer needs in our community through our website, and distribution of a booklet, Guide to Volunteering in Cambridge, through a partnership with Cambridge Volunteer Clearinghouse.

MHH365 partners with many community groups to create other volunteer service events, including the annual Cambridge gun buy-back program—Gift Cards for Guns: A Safer Homes, Safer Community Initiative—food drives, Earth Day events and more.
