About this Event

The Poetry Project has presently suspended all events through the end of April 2020, with the strong possibility that events will need to be suspended beyond this due to COVID-19. We will be offering full refunds for any impacted events, and will also work to reschedule as needed.

Martha King and Margaret Randall are the authors of recently published memoirs tracing artistic community, action, and liberation through the seismic changes of the last half century. With deeply felt documentation, King and Randall articulate closely related stories of will, vision, and friendship that have shaped avant-garde work and life.

Martha King is a poet, fiction writer, memoirist, and editor. Her most recent book Outside Inside follows a life of passionate art-making and friendships from Black Mountain College to San Francisco to New York City in the sixties. Other books include the story collection North & South (Spuyten Duyvil); Imperfect Fit: Selected Poems (Marsh Hawk); and Little Tales of Family and War (Spuyten Duyvil). Her zine, Giants Play Well in the Drizzle, which published from 1983 to 1993, is part of the Rare Books collection at SUNY Buffalo. With Elinor Nauen, she has hosted a monthly reading series, Prose Pros, at Side Walk Cafe. She lives in Brooklyn.

Margaret Randall is a poet, essayist, oral historian, translator, memoirist, and photographer. Her recently published memoir, I Never Left Home, follows her extraordinary life -- from the community of NYC abstract expressionist painters she lived among in the 1950s, to her work in the Nicaraguan Ministry of Culture during the Sandinista movement, to her US return after more than 23 years in Latin America. Randall has published over 150 books of poetry and prose, including Exporting Revolution: Cuba's Global Solidarity; Haydée Santamaría, Cuban Revolutionary: She Led by Transgression; and Che on My Mind, all also published by Duke University Press. Randall was awarded the Poet of Two Hemispheres Prize by Poesía en Paralelo Cero in Quito, Ecuador, and Cuba's Haydée Santamaría medal, and the University of New Mexico gave her an honorary doctorate of letters, all in 2019. She is also the 2020 recipient of the AWP George Garrett Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature. In addition to giving seminars and workshops throughout the United States and Latin America, Randall has taught at the University of New Mexico, Macalester College, the University of Delaware, and Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Randall lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
