Event description

Marriage Small Group. A Small Group Focused on Enriching and Strengthening Marriage in Accordance with God‘s Design.

Please join us!

The Marriage Small Group is an interactive small group for married couples who want to enrich and strengthen their marriage. Each meeting and discussion focuses on real-life topics, practical application and biblical truth, all designed to help couples have and maintain thriving marriages.

We were created for community and that community “happens” powerfully in the small group setting. The opportunity for fellowship and sharing at the deep heart level occurs when we have the chance to get to know one another in a small group setting.

The group meets quarterly. All meetings are free and open to the community. Light dinner will be served.

2019 Meeting Schedule

March 24, 2019 – “Learning to Appreciate Your Spouse”

It is easy to focus on the aggravations, annoyances and behaviors that frustrate or anger us in marriage. This can cause us to lose sight of the significant gifts of kindness and service our spouses give us. If our attitudes are critical or negative, we will miss the joy of married life. So, how can you train yourself to value your spouse? In this session, our leaders will explore ways to value and appreciate your spouse and what it takes to build a marriage of love and respect.

Session discussion points:

  • Mutual respect and admiration are the results of godly character and sacrificial love in marriage

  • God is glorified and you are unified when your marriage is a reflection of Christ’s love, sacrifice, service and humility

  • You have the power, in the Holy Spirit, to destroy the strongholds in your marriage that produce destructive attitudes and behaviors

  • An attitude of respect, appreciation and thanksgiving for your spouse pleases God and strengthens your marriage

June 23, 2019 – “God's View on Sexual Sin...Adultery and Pornography”

In this session, our leaders will tackle and shed light on the sexual sins of adultery and pornography. Adultery is devastating to a marriage and weakens the foundation of trust, love and intimacy. One of the greatest lies about adultery is that it only happens to “bad people.” But, an affair can happen to anyone who does not have his or her guard up. Adultery doesn’t “just happen.” It’s progressive and systematic. It plays on our brokenness and preys on our unmet needs.

Pornography is a drug that seeks to numb the pain and deafen the cries of one's brokenness. Pornography is an illusion that tries to represent real life, real emotions, real situations and real people. But it always falls short. And, while promoting this illusion, pornography slowly rewires the brain, numbs relationships and creates heartache. The research related to porn is alarming; here are some highlights as it relates to faith and marriage:

  • 59% of pastors said that married men seek their help for porn use

  • Porn use increases the marital infidelity rate by over 300%

  • Happily married men are 61% less likely to look at porn

  • 55% of married men and 25% of married women say they watch porn at least once a month

  • 56% of divorce cases involved one party having an obsessive interest in pornographic websites

The greatest antidotes to the dangers of adultery and pornography are a relationship with Jesus Christ and a transparent relationship with your spouse.

September 22, 2019 – “Getting Through the Rough Spots”

Marriage is serious business and a promise worth keeping. The truth is that marriage won’t always be easy. We won’t get it perfectly right and we may often fail in our efforts. All marriages go through a phase when we see only the positive traits in our spouse. Then with new discoveries, our spouses start to lose their angelic glow. Eventually we find ourselves wondering who this person is and what they did with our spouse.

Marriage has rough spots; knowing how to navigate them is essential to maintaining a healthy and thriving marriage. So the question is not whether there will be rough spots, but what we should do when we hit them.

Session discussion points:

  • Look at difficulties in a new light

  • Optimize your spouse’s strengths

  • Openly confess your shortcomings

  • Keep your eyes on the finish line

December 8, 2019 – “Glorify God Together...Marriage of Purpose”

Marriage gives us the opportunity to glorify God with one heart and voice. Our main purpose in marriage should be greater than fulfilling our own wants and needs or even the wants and needs of our spouse. Our main purpose in marriage should be to focus on being of the same mind, according to Jesus, so that with one heart and one voice we glorify God. So how can our marriage be in one accord, so that with one heart and voice we glorify God? In this session, we will explore these questions: Why did God give us the institution of marriage? What is the purpose of marriage? How can our marriage bring glory to God? How can the marriage relationship help make us holy?

Session discussion points:

  • The marriage relationship teaches us to have authentic and intimate fellowship and a strong sense of community with all believers

  • God uses the marriage relationship to make us more like Christ

  • God uses the marriage relationship to train us to honor and serve others above ourselves

  • Marriage may give us a partner to help spread the gospel of Christ

Invest in your marriage, put in the work to have and maintain a thriving marriage!
