Description

Marklund 2017 Benefit: Marklund is a state-of-the-art facility which provides services to individuals with physical disabilities. Marklund’s mission is to make “…everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities.” https://youtu.be/OMCFLAdkY-I

My son, Evan, is 28 and has Down Syndrome. He is very ‘physically’ capable and, consequently, able and very willing to help others. Evan has volunteered at Marklund for 5 years now. When he first started volunteering at Marklund, he met a client there by the name of Tyler. When Evan saw Tyler he observed (a) Tyler’s legs were strapped in his wheel chair, (b) Tyler had no arms from his elbows down, and (c) Tyler had a helmet on. Guess what was the only note-worthy thing about Tyler that Evan observed? … the helmet. I can only imagine Evan’s thought process was:
“Hey, this kid is wearing a helmet. That means he could be a hockey player. That’s who I want for my friend here.”

Nothing about Tyler phased Evan. He only saw the possibility that existed in him. And now, after 5 years together, even though Tyler has never demonstrated to Evan that he can or cannot play hockey, Tyler and Evan are the best of friends (see attached photo of Tyler and Evan at a baseball game this summer). It’s important to realize that neither one of these individuals can verbally communicate to each other. Neither one can say, “I’ll be your friend”, “I’ll help you”, or “Tell me what you need.” How, then, is it possible to strike-up an unconditionally trusting and genuine friendship if you can’t verbally talk to someone? Think about it … there is an answer.

While ‘Evan’ is my connection to Marklund, the concert isn’t about Evan. The concert mission is to raise money and awareness of the volunteer needs of the Marklund facility on behalf of these special individuals; in particular, Marklund’s Aquatic Therapy program. Tyler and his mom are featured in the video link which follows. Please listen to what Tyler’s mom says are the two most important things in Tyler’s life.https://youtu.be/G4CIXHy1qiA

I’d ask that you consider joining me in bringing “music” to Tyler and, whatever is raised at the event, will go toward the Aquatic Therapy program. Hopefully the awareness of the volunteer needs at Marklund will be on-going for many years to come. The date is November 17, 2017 in Geneva. Come join us for fun, combining our gifts and talents for such a worthy cause. HowardClarkMusic.org.
