Mark Piñón
Artist

A native of Houston and graduate of the Art Institute of Houston, Mark Piñón derives artistic inspiration from the Mexican American/Chicano collective consciousness in works that reflect social histories spanning from contemporary times to the indigenous past. Working primarily in acrylics and multi-media on canvas, his paintings depict beauty, spirituality, the quest for freedom and justice and the vitality of Chicano culture. Pre-Columbian symbols and primordial imagery figure prominently, recalling ancient myths and cosmology and invoking spiritual and mystical aspectsof life. Historical and contemporary symbols link the past to the present as reflections of cultural continuity. Such works contrast with the artist’s colorful and vibrant pop art featuring iconic images marked by humor, clever social commentary and creative expressions of irony. Piñón’s art is featured in Triumph of Our Communities: Four Decades of Mexican American Art and in Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art: Artists, Works, Culture, and Education published by Bilingual Press, Arizona State University. His fine art and graphic design appears in many literary works published by University of Houston’s Arte Público Press.

Marc-Antony Piñón
Artist

A graduate of the High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, an alumnus of the Glassell Junior School of Art and a pianist and composer of rap lyrics and beats, Piñón’s early works were heavily influenced by the urban environment of his native H-Town. His figurative, symbolic illustrations project commentaries on the urban experience and the social plight of inner-city youth. In time, his work has evolved from pen and ink, marker and pastel drawings on board to abstract, surrealistic digital art projecting futuristic visions. In muted hues, complex layers of line illustration, shapes and shadows, the works reflect an eye for fine design in depictions of imaginable technological power light years away. The renderings feature fantastically complex futuristic vessels, metallic weaponry and surreal robotic creatures in the realm of abstract scapes. Piñón views his artistic quest as one advancing toward futuristic equations and solutions, which he calls “Algebra of War, Algorithm of Peace.” “These ideas have very real implications,” says the artist, “as design function and technology are equalizers in our delicately balanced world.”
