Former Austinite, best-selling memoirist and NextTribe writer Marion Winik returns "home" to offer an intimate, comprehensive 6-hour session to jump start your writing.
Limited to 12 people, which means you'll get plenty of attention and advice.
Price includes workshop, lunch, free entrance into NextTribe's pop-up magazin event the following day (April 29), PLUS the possibility of reading your work at the event.
In the first part of the workshop we will explore the step-by-step process of turning a memory into a crafted essay. A series of examples and prompts will break this transformation into bite-sized tasks, from choosing what to write about to developing characters, setting, and dialogue, to thinking about theme, structure and organization, and finally revision.
After lunch, we'll shift the focus to the outside world: the personal as political. At this time of deep division in our world, one of the most powerful tools we have for understanding and change is storytelling. Often a story can slip around readers’ defenses or scale their empathy walls in ways a direct argument does not. We’ll talk about examples, brainstorm ideas, and begin work on new pieces, recalling the craft elements we covered in the morning session.
Throughout the day, Marion will also share insights about the ethics of writing about your family and friends, will read from her work, and will talk about the uses of both research and imagination in memoir.
Bring paper, pen, a laptop if you use one, and a scissors.
