Description

Marine communications is more than just using your Marine VHF radio. With new technologies and old there are numerous ways to communicate for emergencies, traffic management or to get weather updates.

Some methods will also allow you to easily keep in touch with family, friends, or your business in the most remote locations you can go boating.

The topics we will cover:

- Using all of the capabilities of your VHF.

- Getting your FCC radio telephone license and registering for your MMSI number.

- How to speak clearly on the radio and use the correct phraseology.

- The proper way to do a radio check on the VHF.

- Use these common radio frequencies

- How to hail other boats, DSC (Digital Selective Calling), and "Distress Calls"

- Gathering weather information on the radio

- When to call the Coast Guard on the VHF

  • When to call Mayday-Mayday, Pan-Pan or a Securite call

Staying connected while away:

-Using Cellular Phones while cruising

-Satellite communications using satphones and sat-text devices like InReach and Spot with options like renting, owning, features and costs, external antenna's

-How to get WIFI onboard with Boosters or Cell Hotspots - do they work?

-Ways for others to follow your adventures (InReach, Spot tracking)

- Man Overboard devices - MOB1 versus personal EPIRBS


This course will present the basics of using a VHF as well as the new technology developments for effective communications in even the most remote locations while boating.
