Event description

Description

Join us for the legendary Bookie Slam.

Our headliner is Neelam Saredia-Brayley. Neelam writes poetry about gender, culture, identity and sexuality. Expect live-drawing and flipchart poetry!

Neelam is followed by ten of Kent's finest slammers, taking to the stage to pit their words against one another to earn their shot at the Kent Poetry Championship.

Neelam was the winner of the 2017 Full English Festival Slam, and has performed in several festivals & events across Kent. In 2018, she opened for Canterbury’s Poet Laureate Lemn Sissay at the University of Kent’s Worldfest celebrations. She works with illustrators and musicians to create multi-disciplinary pieces that are unique to Kent’s poetry scene.

Her set will reach out to the daughters of immigrants; mothers who stay, and their endless unconditional love; of girls who love girls; of girls who sing hurricanes away.

utterly compelling...her poetry is emotive and humorous, full of rhythmic and tonal surprises. She is one to watch - Lydia McCutcheon, Canterbury Culture
