Description

'Improving person-centred care for older people in care homes'

Jenny Collieson, Senior Information Specialist in the Digital team at SCIE and Pamela Holmes, Practice development Manager at SCIE Lead on dementia work and the arts in care homes project.

Personalisation is about supporting an individual’s human rights, control and choice, meeting needs of residents but also promoting quality of life. In a care home this means helping residents maintain a sense of identity and purpose, share decision-making and feel a valued member of their community. Outstanding care embodies a strong person-centred approach to care delivery.Developing a culture of person-centred care in care/nursing homes is achievable and need not be costly, but may feel challenging when care home providers are struggling with financial, regulation and workforce issues and the increasingly complex needs of residents.

Our presentation will show how managers can reflect upon the culture of their own home through an easy to use improvement resource which shares best practice and supports staff training and development. It will give an introduction to:

  • SCIE/TLAP’s new personalisation in care homes resource and reflective online action planning tool for monitoring progress in person-centred care.
  • A new website on the role of arts in care homes developed in association with NAPA
  • Update on new dementia e-learning for care home staff

'Pressure Points: learning from Serious Case Reviews of failures of care and pressure ulcer problems in care homes'
