About this Event

Skills Lab Course

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this training will be held virtually via Zoom.

Date/Time:

Tuesday, March 9: 9:30am-5:00pm

Course Description

Skills Lab fulfills the NYS DOH preceptorship requirements necessary to become a NYS certified Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE). In order to become a NYS certified SAFE, healthcare providers must complete the NYS Department of Health 40-hour didactic course as well as a supervised preceptorship experience.

The Skills Lab is an excellent way for SAFEs to refresh their skills and knowledge base in the areas of evidence collection, interviewing techniques, and more under the supervision of an experienced NYS and International Association of Forensic Nurses certified SAFE/SANE.

Who Should Take this Course

SAFEs who have successfully completed the 40-hour introductory course.

Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this training session, examiners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate evidence collection techniques as required in the protocol for the Acute Care of the Adult Patient Reporting a Sexual Assault
  • Demonstrate interviewing techniques for obtaining medical forensic history
  • Demonstrate appropriate and objective medical record documentation, including documentation of injuries
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide patient education about medical follow-up, medications, and specialized equipment
  • Identify and discuss the need for utilizing the Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault Kit
  • Submit paperwork to NYS DOH for SAFE certification
